This PDF

Text stays real, selectable text. Only colors change: page content, images, comments and form appearances are converted to shades of gray.

How to convert a PDF to black and white

  1. Open your PDF

Drop it on the page. It is processed on your computer.

  2. Convert

Click the button. Text, shapes, images, comments and form appearances are converted to grayscale.

  3. Check and download

The new file downloads straight away, and a preview of its first page appears so you can check the result.

Grayscale without turning your pages into pictures

Many converters "print" each page to an image, then put the images back into a PDF. It works, but the text is no longer text: you cannot select it, search it or copy it, and the file is often much heavier. pdfanonym rewrites the colors inside the document instead. Text stays sharp at any zoom, links keep working, and the file is usually lighter than the original because color photos become single-channel grayscale.

What is converted

Element Result
Colored text and shapes (RGB and CMYK) Shades of gray of matching brightness
Photos and illustrations Grayscale images
Comments, stamps, form field appearances Grayscale
Text Still real, selectable text

Brightness is preserved with the standard luminance formula, so light colors stay light and dark colors stay dark: a red title does not turn into a black block.

Limits

A few rare elements are left as they are and reported after conversion: smooth gradients (shadings), spot colors used in professional print files, and tiny images embedded directly in the page code. The preview shows the result so you can check it before printing.

Black and white or grayscale?

What most people call "black and white" is grayscale: 256 shades between black and white, which keeps photos readable. That is what this tool produces. Printers then render grays with black ink only.

Questions people ask

Will the text still be selectable?

Yes. The text is not converted to an image: you can select, search and copy it exactly as before.

Does it reduce the file size?

Often, yes, because color images are stored with one channel instead of three. Files that contain only text barely change.

Can I convert only some pages?

Not in this tool. Use Extract pages first to keep the pages you need, then convert that file.

Why is something still in color?

Smooth gradients and professional spot colors are not converted. They are rare in office documents; the report after conversion tells you if your file contains any.
